Northern Alberta Trade Route:  Hudson Bay Post  1877-1914

Mud and swollen rivers often blocked the trade routes to the Hudson Bay posts to Fort Edmonton, Fort Assiniboine and the main trade route to lesser Slave Lake.  In the spring of 1874 the Hudson Bay Co. sent out a scout to survey to an alternative route and the idea of the Athabasca Landing was born.  A freight trail 100 miles long was completed between Fort Edmonton and the elbow of the Athabasca river.  Supplies were brought north by cart in the summer and in the winter by sleigh. The Native Bear Symbol represents strength, family, vitality courage and health. The bear is thoughtful and independent, with little need for fellowship. The bear is also self-contained and strong-willed in nature.
